This route pairs the Cultural Triangle with the hill country and the coast: climb the 5th-century Sigiriya Rock Fortress, watch wild elephants gather at Minneriya, cool off in the tea hills of Nuwara Eliya, take on the rapids at Kitulgala if you're up for it, then unwind on Bentota's beaches before flying home from Colombo. Every transfer runs in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking chauffeur.
Day by day
Arrive in Sri Lanka and drive north to the Cultural Triangle (approx. 4 hrs), stopping at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to see rescued elephants bathe and feed, before checking in near Sigiriya for the night.
Climb the 5th-century Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the "8th Wonder of the World" and once the royal citadel of King Kassapa, famed for its frescoes and lion's-paw entrance. In the afternoon, head out on safari at Minneriya National Park for a chance to see "The Gathering" — hundreds of wild elephants converging on the reservoir.
Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, then drive up to Nuwara Eliya (approx. 5 hrs) via a spice garden in Matale, Ramboda Falls, Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple and a working tea factory.
A full day exploring Nuwara Eliya's colonial-era charm, 6,200 feet above sea level, with visits to Seetha Amman Temple, the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Gregory Lake and Victoria Park.
Head down to Bentota via Kithulgala (approx. 6 hrs), with the option of white-water rafting on the Kelani River — 5km with 5 major rapids and 4 minor ones, full safety briefing included. In the evening, tour the historic Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese and fortified by the Dutch.
A Madu River boat ride through mangroves and islands, plus a stop at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, with the rest of the day free to enjoy Bentota's beach.
Transfer to Colombo (approx. 3.5 hrs) for a final city tour and some shopping, before continuing to the airport for your onward flight.
